Weekly Roundup: lazy days

Ah, week seven. The calm before the storm. It felt like a haze I was floating in, like nothing could go wrong. I slowly enjoyed my morning coffee, I made breakfasts, I went running in the afternoon, it was all so calm it was unsettling. I know next week will be the exact opposite of this. I've got a final paper due, a rough draft of another paper due, and a midterm. (I know, what about week eight screams 'mid-term'?) I will not feel like I do today. But it's nice to feel like this, even for a little bit.

Music: While at home for Mother's Day last weekend, my mom showed me the weirdest band ever, The Tubes. They are like the lovechild of Rocky Horror Picture Show and Queen, and also my favorite ever. Some of their song titles include: "White Punks On Dope," "Mondo Bondage" and "Don't Touch Me There." They're coming to Sacramento and San Francisco this summer, and I'm hoping my mom and I can go see them together because I imagine, even now, they put on a fantastic show.

Food: Breakfast triumphs my food roundup once again! Last weekend, I made my mama a breakfast fit for a queen, with Bloody Marys, avocado toast, bacon, and a leek and feta frittata. I snagged some of my parents' applewood smoked bacon to take back with me (I'm still on their dime for another 2 months!) and enjoyed a couple slices on Wednesday as a Hump Day treat. Bacon really does make everything better.

Reads: I started Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie last week and have now really gotten into the thick of it. It is a brilliant coming-of-age tale centered around 15 year old Kambili who is surrounded by a colorful smattering of characters, all fully-fleshed out and wonderfully dynamic in their own way. It is fairly heavy emotionally, written in beautiful, simple prose, and filled with lush description. I already can't wait to finish so I can read some of Adichie's other novels, especially Americanah.

Fashion: I've been online window shopping an oddly large amount this week (I think it's all the downtime) and really need to just let some money go before I implode and impulse buy something outrageous. I'm hunting for a commencement ceremony dress at the moment, and deciding between Zara's ecru sleeveless dress, ASOS' mint midi scoop back sundress, or Modern Citizen's garden party shift dress. And don't even talk to me about shoes yet. I also finally ordered my True and Company home try-on bra box. I'm so excited for new lingerie!

Word: aesthetic |esˈθetik| [ adjective ] concerned with beauty or the appreciation of beauty : the pictures give great aesthetic pleasure.
Because it's always fun to play the Project Runway game "drink every time someone says 'aesthetic'"!
