Weekly Roundup: Mother's Day

Ah, mothers. We owe our lives to our moms...literally. (Ba dum tsh!) I know, personally, my mom has been a rock in my life, head cheerleader on Team Kate, and has always let me let my freak flag fly and be my complete, unabashed self while still being my guide to become a strong, independent woman. But I didn't always feel this way. After all, I was a 15 year old girl once; those notoriously hate their mothers, and I was no different. But finally, I had to tell myself: you've spent your whole life trying not to become your mother, but it's too late, you already are! And, in the words of Ron Burgundy, "in no way is that depressing." So here's to moms, may they always look out for us and may I never become one.

Music: In honor of Mother's Day, the greatest song about moms, "Mama" by Spice Girls.

Food: It's been a wonderful week for breakfast! The most important meal of the day and probably my favorite, I'm finally cooking myself good ass breakfasts again. Monday was avocado toast with eggs, Tuesday was a stew made with leftover black beans from Cinco de Mayo topped with a fried egg, and today was a pepper omelet with jalapeño and cheese. Eggs, as you can tell, are a staple in my diet normally, but especially so now that I'm actually fairly regularly working out again. (I logged in time on the spin bike and ran 4 miles this week! That's a big deal for me!)

Television: The third season of HBO's Veep has been incredibly funny so far, but this last episode was truly some of the most hilarious 30 minutes I have ever watched. The characters continue to get more incompetent, desperate, and evil as Selina's campaign for "Lady POTUS" begins. Dan and Amy's hatred-ridden sexual tension, Mike and Gary's overall confusion, Kent and Ben's douchebag apathy, Sue's everything. I can't wait to see where they go next on the campaign trail.

Reads: Stoya's column on Refinery 29, where people can email in their sex questions and she answers them with her wealth of sexual knowledge as a both a woman in touch with her sexuality and, yes, a porn star. As a professional "onscreen sex-haver," she is candid about sex, but not only that, she is amazingly articulate and encouraging of both self- and others-discovery. It's refreshing to read something so supportive of women taking agency of their own sex lives.
